Help Inspire a Love of Reading

Kids who read for fun, read to learn. Through our Reading Mentors program, we provide students with their own library of new books and consistent one-on-one reading time with a caring adult.

Reading Mentors currently serve all six elementary schools in the Canby School District. Contact your student’s school to learn about this option.

Reading Mentors Impact Story

Students grew in their reading, but even more in their confidence. They thrive when they get one-on-one time with an adult to support their reading and them on a personal level. I had a student share with his mentor that he was having a problem on the bus and then that was relayed to me so I could address it. It is so amazing to have adults show up once a week to care for, encourage and listen to our students.

Reading Mentors FAQ

We set all our volunteers up for success. Prior to their first reading session with a student, Reading Mentors are oriented on program procedures, school safety measures, reading tips, and more.

Reading Mentors are screened by a minimum of two reference calls and a school district facilitated background check.

Selection for the program is not an indication that a student is below reading level or in need of supplemental instruction. Rather, school staff identify students they think will thrive through participation in this program.
